Why This Exists

The door is usually locked.

We know who has the key.

Access to the best wine experiences has never been about money. Money can buy a bottle of RomanĂ©e-Conti, but that alone won’t get you into the cellar. The places worth visiting are often small, family-run estates where visits happen by relationship rather than reservation. The guides here have those relationships. That’s your in.

I built The Cellar Guest because great wine tour guides and mediocre ones are nearly impossible to tell apart until you’re standing in front of them. By then it’s too late. The right ones are found through personal referrals, wine forums, industry events, and quiet word-of-mouth that takes years to accumulate. I spent two decades doing exactly that.

My name is Michelle Ryan. I’m a WSET Level 3 certified wine professional, a French Wine Scholar, and an IATA-accredited travel advisor. I’ve traveled these regions for years. I’ve been in those cellars, shared those tables, and learned which guides create experiences that you don’t forget.

Every operator on this site was personally evaluated. Not every operator we considered made it. The criteria are specific: guide credentials, demonstrated access to producers who don’t take public visitors, and an intake process that asks about your background before building your itinerary. That last part matters more than most people realize. The best guides shape the day around who you are and what you want from it, not a fixed itinerary built for someone else.

“The guides listed here have relationships with producers who don’t take public visitors, and it’s the reason this directory exists.”

The Cellar Guest isn’t a booking platform. There’s no checkout, no commission, no algorithm deciding what you see first. It’s a directory of people I’d send my own clients to. You contact them directly. They’ll ask a few questions. Then they’ll build something worth the trip.

The cellar door isn’t locked for everyone. It opens for the right guest.

They’re expecting you.
