Private Wine Guide and Author · Burgundy, France
Bill wrote the book on Burgundy. Literally: The Finest Wines of Burgundy, published by the University of California Press as part of the Fine Wine Editions series, with earlier work in World of Fine Wine. He has worked the harvest in the region for more than 25 years. He teaches wine. He knows the domaines at the level of someone who has stood in the vineyard during picking, not just tasted the finished bottles in a tasting room.
He is the most consistently recommended private guide in Burgundy among serious wine collectors. That pattern holds across nearly a decade of recommendations. It is not a coincidence.
Bill limits his guiding to a maximum of three days per month. He considers himself principally a chronicler of Burgundy, and the tours exist alongside that work, not instead of it. He takes direct bookings only, requires full pre-payment eight weeks in advance, and guides in English and German.
Bill's access to Burgundy's serious domaines comes from decades of presence, not from a booking account. These are the kinds of visits his guests describe.
