Some questions we get asked

FAQ

Most of the questions we get come down to the same thing: who are you, and why should I trust you?

What exactly is The Cellar Guest?

A directory of private wine tour guides across Europe, personally vetted. Not a booking platform. There’s no checkout, no commission, no algorithm. You find a guide, you contact them directly, and you go.

The point of the directory is that every listing has been evaluated against specific criteria by someone with the credentials and the mileage to know a good guide from a mediocre one. Most operators we look at don’t make it in.

Who does the vetting?

Michelle Ryan. WSET Level 3, French Wine Scholar, IATA Certified Travel Advisor, more than twenty years traveling Europe’s wine regions. She ran the wine program at a local bar for several years, has professional relationships with guides across many wine regions, and has done enough bad tours to know exactly what a good one looks like.

Every operator listed here was evaluated by her against three things: their credentials, the producers they can actually access, and whether they have a process for understanding you before they start planning.

The criteria go beyond credentials and access. The guides listed here know how to bring you into a room as a guest, not a tourist. That distinction matters, and it comes from someone who has spent decades in hospitality understanding exactly what it feels like to be genuinely welcomed.

What does “vetted” actually mean?

It means a guide has been evaluated against a documented standard, not just good reviews on a mass-market platform. The criteria: real wine credentials (WSET, certified sommelier, or winemaker background), demonstrated access to producers not available through public booking, and an intake process that starts with understanding the traveler.

A guide who asks about your experience, your knowledge, and what you want from the day before building your itinerary is doing something most operators don’t bother with. We look for that specifically. That’s the difference between arriving somewhere as a visitor and arriving as someone they were expecting.

Vetting isn’t a one-time event. Guides are evaluated on an ongoing basis. A listing here isn’t permanent, and operators know that.

Who is this for?

Serious wine enthusiasts who have done the standard tours and found them underwhelming. You know enough about wine to know what you don’t know yet. You want a guide who can help you have a real conversation with the winemaker, not just translate the label. You want to visit a cellar that isn’t on any map you’ve already seen.

If you’ve already done the famous estates and want to go deeper, this is where to start.

Why would I use this instead of contacting wineries myself?

You could. Many serious wine travelers do exactly that: build a list three times longer than they need, send dozens of emails, accept the turndowns (if you get a response at all), and piece together something that might work.

Most wineries in Europe don’t operate that way. They don’t respond to cold emails. They open their doors through people they trust, to guests who’ve been vouched for. That’s what the guides listed here provide. It’s a shorter path to a door that’s actually open for you.

Is this free?

Yes. No booking fees, no membership, no paywall. The directory is free to use and always will be. Operators pay to be featured; travelers don’t pay anything to find them.

What if I want more than a directory listing?

For travelers who want a fully planned private wine itinerary built by someone who knows the region, that’s available through DMR Travel, an IATA-accredited travel agency. It’s a limited VIP service, offered by inquiry only. If it sounds like what you need, reach out.

Can I recommend a guide?

If you’ve worked with a guide who you think belongs here, we want to hear about it. Send a note to hello@thecellarguest.com with their name, region, and why you think they’re worth a look. We can’t list everyone who gets recommended, but every suggestion gets a proper look.

One more thing worth knowing.

The access these guides provide exists because of relationships built over years. The winemaker opens the door because they trust the person bringing you. Every visit either deepens that trust or spends it.

Come curious. Ask questions. Buy a bottle if you love what’s in the glass. Those gestures matter more than most visitors realize.
