What we look for

Credentials. A guide here holds a recognized wine qualification (WSET, sommelier certification) or documented experience in wine production or the wine trade. “Knowledgeable about wine” is not a credential. We verify against sources, not against the guide’s own website.

Access. Named producers the guide has actually brought guests to, including cellars and estates not available through public booking platforms. Every operator claims relationships. We look for evidence: specific producers, verifiable history, and what serious travelers say about them in the places serious travelers talk.

How they work. Guides listed here ask about you before they build anything: what you have tasted, where you have been, what you want from the visit. A pre-built itinerary sold as private is not a private tour.

What gets a guide left off

Most evaluations do not end in a listing. Common reasons: credentials that cannot be verified, access claims that trace back to public tasting rooms, itineraries that are the same for every guest, or inquiries that go unanswered. A polished website and strong TripAdvisor scores are not enough on their own; some of the best guides we list have almost no digital footprint at all, and some of the most visible operators did not make it.

Not every operator we evaluate is listed. Some are declined at research, some after closer review, and some are removed later.

After the listing

Listings are not permanent. Each guide is re-verified annually, and a listing is removed if the standard is no longer met. If you have had an experience with a listed guide that we should know about, good or bad, write to us. The directory only works if it stays true.
